Responsible Wine Vendor Training Requirements

Clerks or anyone that will, or could possibly use a register, must take a TABC certified Responsible Vendor Course. This course is approximately 1 hour in length and covers carding, legal sales, how to identify and react to certain high risk situations, and the TN Rules and Regulations. Clerks must pass with a 70%.

Responsible Vendor Clerk Certification

Each clerk is required to have a valid Certificate of Completion (proof of training) from a certified program on the premises. The certification is valid for one year. The course must be completed every year to obtain a valid certificate.

Newly Hired Clerks have a 61-day grace period before they must have a certificate on the Premises. It is highly suggested that no one be allowed to sell alcohol before they have been trained.

Public vs. Private Certificates

If a clerk has a certificate from a company that is available to the public, such as TopShelf, the certificate remains valid when the clerk moves to a new company.  If a clerk has a certificate through in-house company training, say Green Tree Groceries, this is considered private training and will not be valid at another company.

The TABC requires a Certified Clerks List to accompany new applications and annual renewals.     This list includes the name and location of the store and the first and last name of all clerks or cashiers.
